Here are my two biggest issues with the learning different child and Special Education. Putting a dyslexic child in Special Education is providing a dis-service to them because they have an above average intelligence. They don’t need Special Education, they need the curriculum taught in a different way.
Curriculum taught in a different way is not lowering the standards,
modifying the curriculum, or providing a specialized education.
Providing reading therapy is also not specialized education because it's
done by a trained therapist to rewire the connections in the student's
brain. These reading therapist aren't trying to change the curriculum
to make it specialized due to intelligence. We are taking therapeutic
strategies so the child can automatically read/understand the curriculum
being taught in the mainstream classroom.
When a child breaks their arm, which they write with, we don’t put them in a Special Education class. We give them the accommodations until his physical therapy remediates the child and the child writes again. This is almost the same with the dyslexic child. But we give the reading therapy during school hours so they can use the newly required tools throughout the school day. Through reading remediation we can rewire the brain; and the classroom teacher can provide opportunities for the rewiring to get stronger.
On another note, putting a dyslexic child in a Special Education class with mentally handicap students, who have below intelligences, is going to send a message that the dyslexic child is stupid. The emotional scaring from the label of 'Special Education' is very hard to over come.
As a Dyslexic Therapist, do I get a Special Education endorsement in hopes I end up working with the dyslexic child? With the new SB 612 that was passed in Oregon's Legislator (stating someone who has knowledge of the dyslexic child needs to be in all Public K-5 schools), will that 'someone' come from or be put in Special Education Administration? Is the Special Education Endorsement be the pathway to get Reading Remediation to the struggling student, who can't afford tutoring?
Fair Selection.....I don't want the fish to feel stupid because he can't climb the tree. I want to provide a strategy so he can go up the tree and experience seeing the word with amazing confidence.
I have a lot to think about in the next couple weeks.
